It all begins with an idea.

The Ghana Project

By collaborating with Kokrobite Chiltern Centre, ISZL Aquaponics strives to better the lives of the community in Kokrobite, Ghana, by providing them with a new form of work and way to produce their own food through the aquaponics system.

The Current Situation

The town of Kokrobite used to be a traditional fishing village, however after Ghana sold its fishing rights to China, Chinese companies dominated the fishing industry, leaving little to no fish left for the Ghanaians to catch. Furthermore, the livelihood of the people isn’t much better: With 34% of the population older than 15 being illiterate, and only 60% having attended school for a certain period of time, the community lacked not only a reliable source of food but also proper education

How we got involved

Mike Jenkins, a past teacher at ISZL, pitched the idea for our school to collaborate with the non-profit organization Kokrobite Chiltern Centre (KCC) in 2008. Having worked with the organization’s founders, Jane and Martial Zohoungbogbo, he believed that it was a cause worth supporting. Unfortunately, Mike left our school, however, teacher Christopher Koch took over and was able to establish an official collaboration between ISZL and KCC in 2014, where students would be able to travel to Ghana and work with the organization to improve the lives of the local community by finding solutions to the various problems they are facing.
