What We Do

Since 2018, our group has been testing and developing our own aquaponics system to ultimately install a similar system in Kokrobite, Ghana in order for the community to be able to produce their own foods in an independent and sustainable way.

Our Group at a Glance

Aquaponics is a way of farming that involves raising aquatic organisms like fish in harmony with edible plants in a symbiotic cycle. At the high school campus of the International School of Zug and Luzern, we have a small experimental model of an aquaponics system with colorful koi and carp fish that we use to better understand the necessary variables that need to be taken into consideration before installing a larger system over in Ghana.

“This system will hopefully not only empower the local people and enable them to create livelihoods based on this sustainable ideology, but also provide endless opportunities for students to engage in a meaningful project”

A Brief History

In 2014, ISZL founded an official collaboration with Kokrobite Chiltern Centre, where students would be able to travel to Ghana and work with the organization to improve the lives of those in Krokobite, Ghana. Students were tasked to figure out how to create jobs for the people, as well as find a way that they could grow their own produce. Their solution? Building a simple aquaponics system that would yield a variety of products for the Ghanian community.

Our Projects

  • Developing Sensors

Designing and testing sensors that send an alert when water parameters go out of a certain range to assist in system management

  • Promoting Our Cause

Educating not only our school community but also those outside to try and gain support for our cause through this website and our Instagram!

  • School Store

In order for us to raise money for our Ghana trips and the system, we’re hoping to open a school store to sell some of our school-grown produce!
